About Spectral MD, Inc.

Spectral MD, a mid-stage medical device company, is developing a diagnostic imaging system to support treatment decisions by healthcare professionals in the wound care market, especially burns and chronic wounds. We focus on the combination of AI and machine learning techniques with digital images to meet the needs of our clinician customers in wound management.

Position Overview:

Spectral MD is seeking an experienced and motivated imaging systems architect. The candidate will have experience developing designing, implementing, and leading development of imaging systems from selection and arrangement of components, system calibration, and image processing pipeline. Specific experience in stereo imaging and multispectral imaging is required, preferably in the context of handheld devices.

We are looking for passionate and self-driven individuals who can participate in the design, and development of existing and new imaging systems for our imaging device designed for surgeons in the operating room.

Prior medical device experience, especially the ability to write design documentation for regulated industries, would be a plus. The candidate must be comfortable working and coding within a team, have good interpersonal skills, and teach others within their areas of expertise.

Responsibilities:

  • Select system components for stereo imaging systems and/or provide specifications for design of custom system components.

  • Create, develop, and improve algorithms for camera calibration and for creating high density, high accuracy depth maps from stereo image pairs.

  • Understand impact of individual components on calibration accuracy and quality of imaging system outputs, including contrast, brightness, uniformity, and depth maps.

  • Work with other imaging systems engineers, software engineers, and mechanical engineers to appropriately tolerance system components to meet requirements on the imaging system outputs.

  • Identify strengths and weaknesses of proposed imaging system architectures in terms of accuracy, processing speed, and development effort prior to committing to a specific architecture.

  • Create and implement test plans and test methods for verifying imaging system performance with respect to all imaging system outputs.

  • Create plans consisting of well-defined tasks towards the completion of key milestones in imaging system development.

  • Implementation and delegation of well-defined tasks. Track progress of a team toward completion of imaging system development milestones.

  • Writing requirements for low-level software and middleware.

  • Documents design specifications and drives the development of lower level engineering specifications from user requirements

  • Identify vendors and contract manufacturers to source components and assembly of components into completed systems.

  • Participates in peer reviews and code inspections

  • Ability to travel approximately 10%, up to 20%, including internationally

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related engineering field with an emphasis on computer vision, or relevant experience in imaging system development.

  • At least 4 years of relevant experience in imaging systems.

  • Working knowledge of camera and stereo calibration, including correction of lens distortion and rectification of stereo image pairs.

  • Working knowledge of epipolar geometry and algorithms for calculating stereo image pair disparity.

  • Experience with one or more of the following image processing platfors: OpenCV, Matlab Image Processing Toolkit, Scikit-image, Numpy/Scipy.

  • Working knowledge of optics, including lenses, lens selection, spectroscopy, and radiometry.

  • Excellent communication skills – ability to communicate technical information, both written and verbally, to a wide audience from peers through upper management

  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 7 years of relevant, progressively more responsible work experience in imaging systems development and/or a graduate degree with relevant project experience.

  • Detailed knowledge of and experience with camera and stereo calibration.

  • Experience with OpenGL, CUDA, or any other GPU-accelerated software development tools.

  • Familiar with LIDAR, time of flight, and other depth/distance measuring tools.

  • Experience in medical device product development and documentation, or in another regulated industry (i.e. Defense, Aerospace, Automotive, Telecom)

  • Prior experience working with AI development teams

  • Strong communication skills to both business and technical partners is essential.

  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work with constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
